A Day of Strange Things!

22/09/2011

Years ago, when people began to buy personal computers for the first time, I decided I would never have one of those things about the house! Mind you, I soon reneged on that decision! I had listened as friends of mine explained how they had bought this strange new device, and how they now could play games and type letters and help the we’uns to learn to count! We were amazed at the progress of technology and science! But, you know, today those primitive computers are totally obsolete! Now we have computers that fit in a brief-case, that speak to each other across thousands of miles, over the internet, that can manipulate pictures and images and that can do everything from basic addition to controlling space-craft. We live in a day of strange and amazing innovations!

In the Bible, we are told that the people who witnessed the miracles of Jesus were amazed as they marvelled at the wonders He performed. In Luke chapter 5, there is a marvellous account of how the Lord Jesus healed a man who couldn’t walk. This man had friends who were determined to overcome every obstacle to bring the paralysed man to Jesus, so they climbed onto the roof of the house, opened the slates of the roof, and lowered the man down into the room in his bed! Jesus immediately addressed the man, telling him that his sins were forgiven, a statement which infuriated the Pharisees and religious leaders who were standing nearby.

To prove that He, the Son of God, really had the power and right to forgive men’s sins, Jesus then told the man to arise, and take up his bed and go home. To the astonishment of the crowd of onlookers, the man stood up, picked up his bed, and walked home! Their reaction is recorded for us in Luke 5:26 And they were all amazed, and they glorified God, and were filled with fear, saying, We have seen strange things to day. They had never seen anything like it in all their lives! Jesus always does strange and marvellous things which no other can do! He completely changes the lives and hearts of sinners who trust Him.

So, what causes us to stand back in wonder and amazement these days? Is it the latest computer, the most up to date technology? All these things become obsolete, and all soon need replaced. The men who witnessed that miracle in Bible days soon learned where the real wonder of life lies. Like the hymnwriter we too must learn to ‘Stand amazed in the presence of Jesus, the Nazarene, and wonder how He could love me, a sinner, condemned, unclean!”
