DIY Disasters – When NOT to attempt DIY!

A few years ago I went to one of the local DIY stores and bought myself a greenhouse.

There was only one problem. The greenhouse was self-assembly; I had to actually build it myself! Now, I would have to confess that horticultural construction has never really been my strong point!

I’d already had some experience of this. A few months after my long suffering wife and I got married, I had decided that we needed some kind of garden shed, somewhere to keep my wonderful new collection of tools and gadgets! I went down to the timber merchant’s, picked up a trailer load of wood, and happily began the task of constructing the shed. It looked just fine to me, and so, completely satisfied with my endeavours, I went indoors to get a cup of tea, and of course, as you would expect, to boast to the better half about how little time and effort it had taken me to put this great edifice together.

I was no sooner sat down at the table, than one of our neighbours arrived at the front door. “Bob,” he began, “That wooden structure at the side of your house…” “Yes,” I replied my heart just bursting with pride, “You mean my new garden shed…” “Yes,” he replied, “Well, is it meant to be lying on the bonnet of your car?” To my horror, the shed, my pride and joy, had completely collapsed, and landed right on the bonnet of my new car!

And I can tell you that in the ensuing thirty plus years of married bliss, nothing much has changed in the do it yourself department!

But there is one department of life, which none of us can afford to deal with in a DIY fashion, and that’s the matter of our spiritual wellbeing. When it comes to spiritual matters, the last thing we want to do, is to go our own way! Now that would certainly be a recipe for disaster! The Bible cautions us in Proverbs 3:5 Trust in the Lord with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding.

The only DIY lesson I have learned in the last few years is to closely follow the maker’s instructions! Thankfully, spiritually speaking, we do have our Divine Maker’s instructions for life. God has laid down for us in His Word, the Bible, all that we need to know about the meaning of life, about the sinful nature of mankind, about the need for a Saviour, and about the love of God for sinners, in sending His only begotten and sinless Son into this world, to die on the Cross that humble repentant sinners might be saved by His grace. All of that is explained to us in God’s Word the Bible!

One hymnwriter wrote these words:

I am so glad that our Father in heaven,
Tells of His love in the Book He has given,
Wonderful things in the Bible I see,
This is the dearest, that Jesus loves me!

So why would we try to deal with our spiritual life in any other way, than that which is appointed for us in God’s great master plan! In Proverbs 16:25 we read, There is a way that seemeth right unto a man, but the end thereof are the ways of death.

Well, by closely following the Maker’s instructions, I finally got the greenhouse built, although it took me two days!

And as for my spiritual well-being, I’ll leave all of that in the hands of Jesus Christ, my Saviour, Lord and Master, and I’ll gain daily guidance for life by reading and remembering His inspired and inerrant Word, the Holy Bible. The psalmist said, Thy word have I hid in mine heart, that I might not sin against thee.
