Imitating God?

A sober, and humbling passage from God’s Word…

Therefore be imitators of God, as beloved children. And walk in love, as Christ loved us and gave himself up for us, a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God. But sexual immorality and all impurity or covetousness must not even be named among you, as is proper among saints. Let there be no filthiness nor foolish talk nor crude joking, which are out of place, but instead let there be thanksgiving. For you may be sure of this, that everyone who is sexually immoral or impure, or who is covetous (that is, an idolater), has no inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and God.

(Ephesians 5:1-5 ESV)

We are to imitate God in our daily walk. Yet we are powerless to do this in our own strength, for we are sinners, by nature and practice. Notice how Paul commences this passage. Telling us that we are to be imitators of God, he says that the only way we can ever walk in the Lord’s footsteps is to be His Children. ‘Beloved Children‘. It is only because Christ has loved us, and brought us by adoption into God’s family, that we have the right and the means to imitate Him. As a young child imitates its elder brother, so we should follow Christ, and seek to do His will and walk in His ways.

But the covenant love, and the saving act of adoption must come first. We cannot please God or attain salvation by our own efforts. We must first know Christ, and His forgiveness.
