PCUSA Gender Influences on the PCI?
Ungodly Gender Influences from the USA
One of our daily local newspapers here in Northern Ireland, the ‘Belfast Telegraph’ has a Saturday Religion Page, edited by one Alf McCreary. Mr McCreary is a liberal journalist, who attends a Presbyterian Church (Presbyterian Church in Ireland). His own local ‘pastor’ is a woman, and predictably, every year coming up to the election of the moderator of the General Assembly, he uses his column in the paper to campaign for the election of a woman to that post. (It’s none of my business what another denomination does about its leadership elections, but to my mind, the election of a ‘woman moderator’ is of little relevance, compared with the ordination of woman elders, after all, the moderator is largely just a figurehead, not an ‘archbishop’ – the real offence against the Scriptures is to place women in a teaching position in the church which they are not entitled to hold.)
Mr McCreary was no doubt delighted with the remarks of his interviewee on the ‘A Question of Faith’ column on the page today. This is a small side panel, in which standard questions are put to a selected ‘religious celebrity;’ questions like, ‘What is your idea of heaven’ or ‘Eternity, will it be boring?’ I always look first at the question, ‘Your finest moment of spiritual enlightenment?’ And then at the question, ‘Could God be a woman.’ On the answer to these two questions one can generally assess the interviewee’s theological leanings, on a broad left-right scale.
This week’s column featured a Mr Will Massey, a youth worker volunteer from the PCUSA (Presbyterian Church, USA – a very liberal denomination), who just happened to be on secondment to Mr McCleary’s very own church, the one with the pastrix. So what did he reply when asked, “Could God be a woman?”
“God is no more woman than man. Gender is fundamentally a human construction, and it is unhelpful to cram God into that box…”
WHAT!!!? Gender is a HUMAN CONSTRUCTION? Has this man not read a Bible at all? Here are the words of Jesus on the idea that gender is just something we humans have invented,
Matthew 19:4-6 And he answered and said unto them, Have ye not read, that he which made them at the beginning made them male and female,
5 And said, For this cause shall a man leave father and mother, and shall cleave to his wife: and they twain shall be one flesh?
6 Wherefore they are no more twain, but one flesh. What therefore God hath joined together, let not man put asunder.
The Biblical position on gender, is that there are only two genders, male and female, and God made them that way, we don’t get to choose.
So has young Will, the liberal ‘youth volunteer’ from PCUSA bought into this postmodern cultural mindset that your gender depends on you? Does he, like some social media sites, think that there’s 50 or so ‘genders’ out there? Or can’t your ‘gender’ be what you want it to be, instead of what your body looks like and plainly tells you?
So, why isn’t the PCI office in Belfast at Church House, and church manses through the country, being inundated with Presbyterian callers asking why their denomination is welcoming liberals, from a liberal denomination, to come here and spread their wretched postmodern views among young people who are already being bombarded with postmodern sexual messages by the media their educators and their peers.
I thought Presbyterians were supposed to have a high view of their children, as heirs of the promise of salvation, so why aren’t they protecting them from Will Massey and his liberal views on gender?
I feel I must rise to the defence of this young man. He was asked a difficult question, “Could God be a woman?”. The first part of his answer is quite correct. He noted that, “God is no more woman than man”. The final part of his answer is also correct, “it is unhelpful to cram God into a box.” In essence, he said that God is beyond our comprehension – except as revealed in Jesus. The problem with his answer is the part in the middle on which you have chosen to focus. You used his error as an excuse to rile against the PCUSA. I find it sad that you did not use your standing as a teacher experienced in dealing with difficult questions to offer some guidance to this young man. To mock “young Will” with your hypothetical questions is uncalled-for.
[Full disclosure: I am a member of a PCUSA church. I do not agree with some of the current trends advanced by the leadership but I am hopeful that with God’s grace His truth will prevail. Your article might titillate your audience but it does nothing to aid us to solve our problems. ]
Hi
When was that in the paper?
That’s a disgrace. He should be reprimanded for that. Really he should.
I see you didn’t answer the questions he was posed. Was that deliberate?
I could use it myself as a sermon soon if this liberal’s post has been out recently.

It was Saturday 21st Feb 2015. His other answers were pathetic too, but to state that Gender is a human construction is mind blowing! I wonder has he bee influenced by Rob Bell?
Such views have no place whatsoever in any Presbyterian congregation.
