Zechariah’s Fifth Vision

Zechariah 4:1-10

Zerubbel the governor (Hag 1:1) is mentioned in Zechariah’s fifth vision, and again this vision is all about DOING GOD’S WORK. Let us see three great principles…

1. Gods METHODS for His Work! 1-6

And the angel that talked with me came again, and waked me, as a man that is wakened out of his sleep, And said unto me, What seest thou? It’s almost as if Zechariah has been sleeping! Zechariah’s state is something similar to that of most Christians today. We are walking, but we are also sleeping, Amos 6:1 We need an alarm! We need to wake up to:-

  • The true state of mankind!
  • The immorality and ungodliness of our times
  • The true nature of the Lord’s Church, and the Divine Power at its Disposal!   So Zechariah sees:-
  1. A Divine DESCRIPTION of the Church! The church is:-
    1. A Light Shining! And I said, I have looked, and behold a candlestick all of gold, with a bowl upon the top of it, and his seven lamps thereon, and seven pipes to the seven lamps, which are upon the top thereof. This is a candlestick, a description of the church. 1:12-13. But where is the church to get its source of light? Sadly today, there are many Christians who believe that the light which must shine out is to be their own light but this lamp-stand has:-
    2. A Lofty Source! And two olive trees by it, one upon the right side of the bowl, and the other upon the left side thereof. There are two trees standing by the lamp-stand, and they are Olive Trees, and they are the source of power for the lamps, for there are pipes leading directly into the cups of the lamps!

Now, do you see the wonderful symbolism here! Here are lamps burning continuously, lamps that man’s hand did not make, and does not feed, and yet are supplied from a source that is exhaustless, the living trees that are standing beside the lamp. The strength to do God’s work comes from God Himself, it does not come from ourselves! So we have here:-

  1. A Divine PRESCRIPTION for the Church! This is God’s prescription for the sleeping-sickness of His people:-
    1. The strength of man cannot build Gods kingdom! This is the word of the Lord unto Zerubbabel, saying, Not by might, nor by power. This is God’s Word! YOU CANNOT BUILD MY CHURCH OR MY KINGDOM ON YOUR OWN! Such a plan will fail   We cannot build the Church through the methods of man! But:-
    2. The Spirit of the Lord CAN build Gods Kingdom! but by my spirit, saith the Lord of hosts. You see, if the strength to build the church, to do God’s work, comes from God alone, then the weakness of man is no obstacle to that work, for when we are weak, He is strong! Zerubbabel may have very few visible resources, but it was GOD WHO WOULD COMPLETE THE WORK!    Romans 8:31

So, God’s work can only be done in God’s way. In God’s economy, METHODS are just as important as message, and those methods are laid down for us in His Word! God’s Work must be done God’s Way! But see:-

2. Gods MAINTENANCE of His Work! 7-10

Humanly speaking, the people of God have a seemingly impossible task.   But God is with His people, and God will do His work. Who art thou, O great mountain? before Zerubbabel thou shalt become a plain: and he shall bring forth the headstone thereof with shoutings, crying, Grace, grace unto it.. So God only gives the strength to do His work, but he carries it on, maintains it, and cares for it – it is HIS WORK! See,

  • Gods work, done in Gods way, shall always prevail! The hands of Zerubbabel have laid the foundation of this house; his hands shall also finish it; and thou shalt know that the Lord of hosts hath sent me unto you.
  • Gods work must not be despised! For who hath despised the day of small things? Hence, Zechariah rebuked his people for having “despised the day of small things.” (Little is much – when God is in it!).  One should never disdain the “small,” for God frequently uses small things to accomplish great ends 2 Cor. 12:9
  • Gods work will cause the heart of His people to rejoice! for they shall rejoice, and shall see the plummet in the hand of Zerubbabel with those seven; they are the eyes of the Lord, which run to and fro through the whole earth. When the people of God see Zerubbabel returning to the work, awakening out of his torpor, rising up to complete the work there will be rejoicing among the people.

3. Gods MEN for His Work! 11-14 What are these two olive trees upon the right side of the candlestick and upon the left side thereof? And I answered again, and said unto him, What be these two olive branches which through the two golden pipes empty the golden oil out of themselves? Zechariah has seen the people of God depicted as a lampstand, drawing power from a source outside itself and has received an explanation of that vision. Now he asks about the two olive trees and two branches along which the oil is flowing. Interestingly, he doesn’t receive an answer to the first question, but he does to the second. The two branches are the two anointed ones. These are the two anointed ones, that stand by the Lord of the whole earth. TV Moore translates this, the two ‘men of oil.’ They are channels, through whom God empowers and equips and blesses His people! In the Bible, the ‘oil’ speaks of the Holy Sprit. These men are people who are filled with the holy Spirit, spiritual men, whom God has raised up for His work! They are truly ‘channels of blessing!’

For further study:

How does God empower His people for service? Acts 9:31, 16:5, Phil 2:12-13, Col 1:11, 2:7, Heb 13:9

In planning missions in God work, what issues must we take into account? Gen 24:50, Mark 4:26-29, Lk 12:13-21, Acts 5:38-39, 18:21, Phil 1:15-18, James 4:13-15.

Consider the idea of ‘anointing.’ Psalm 23:5; 2nd Cor 1:21-22; 1st John 2:20,27
