Lead Us Not Into Temptation… Matt 6:13

Lead Us Not into Temptation.

Text . Matthew 6:13. And lead us, not into temptation, but deliver us, from evil..

Lord’s Day 52 Q127.

Lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil. Would God ever lead us into temptation?  Is the wording of this petition a plea for God not to ‘toy’ with us by placing temptation in our way?  Does God want to trip us up, and we are pleading with him not to?  No.  we are asking him to LEAD US OUT OF, AWAY FROM, TEMPTATION, to protect us from ourselves, and our wicked sinful hearts.  Implied in the petition is that when God LEADS us we are safe, whereas when we follow our own lead we go astray and wander into dangerous ways.  We can trust God, when we cannot trust ourselves. Deuteronomy 8:2, And you shall remember the whole way that the LORD your God has led you these forty years in the wilderness, that he might humble you, testing you to know what was in your heart, whether you would keep his commandments or not. 3 And he humbled you and let you hunger and fed you with manna, which you did not know, nor did your fathers know, that he might make you know that man does not live by bread alone, but man lives by every word that comes from the mouth of the LORD.

In the wilderness, (Matthew 4:1 Then Jesus was led up by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil.)  Jesus was tempted – by the Devil.  R C Sproule reminds us that God will TEST us, but will not allow us to be tempted beyond what we can bear.  1 Cor 10:13 No temptation has overtaken you that is not common to man. God is faithful, and he will not let you be tempted beyond your ability, but with the temptation he will also provide the way of escape, that you may be able to endure it.

In this petition of the Lord’s Prayer we learn…

Our Rationale for Godly Living.

This petition is very challenging for us, for it gets right to the heart of our problem, that even as believers we are still subject to temptation and sin.  Simul Justis et Peccator.

  1. We are so weak that we cannot preserve and keep ourselvesPsalm 103:14-16 14  For He knows our frame; He remembers that we are dust. 15  As for man, his days are like grass; As a flower of the field, so he flourishes. 16 For the wind passes over it, and it is gone, And its place remembers it no more.  But the situation is even worse!
  2. We have terrible enemies arraigned against us.
    1. The devil2 Corinthians 11:14 And no wonder! For Satan himself transforms himself into an angel of light.
    2. The world. John 15:18 “If the world hates you, know that it has hated me before it hated you. 19 If you were of the world, the world would love you as its own; but because you are not of the world, but I chose you out of the world, therefore the world hates you.
    3. My own flesh. Rom 7:23 but I see in my members another law waging war against the law of my mind and making me captive to the law of sin that dwells in my members.  Gal 5:17. 17 For the desires of the flesh are against the Spirit, and the desires of the Spirit are against the flesh, for these are opposed to each other, to keep you from doing the things you want to do.
  3. It is because of this that we need Christ. He alone preserves usJohn 15:1-5. 4 Abide in Me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself, unless it abides in the vine, neither can you, unless you abide in Me.  5 “I am the vine, you are the branches. He who abides in Me, and I in him, bears much fruit; for without Me you can do nothing.

There is help!

Our Resources for Godly Living.

We have three Great Resources:-

  1. Prayer.  This is why Jesus teaches us this petition in his model prayer.   26:41 Watch and pray that you may not enter into temptation.
  2. Divine Strengthening.  That’s the answer to this prayer. H/C ‘Will you, therefore, uphold and strengthen us’.  Matt 10:19 When they deliver you over, do not be anxious how you are to speak or what you are to say, for what you are to say will be given to you in that hour.   is willing, but the flesh is weak.
  3. The Holy Spirit. Romans 5:3  Not only that, but we rejoice in our sufferings, knowing that suffering produces endurance, 4 and endurance produces character, and character produces hope, 5 and hope does not put us to shame, because God’s love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit who has been given unto us

It is only through use of these resources through complete reliance on the Lord that we are kept and do not go down into defeat.

Our Reward for Godly Living.

‘H/C but always firmly resist our enemies, until we finally obtain the complete victory.’

It is the final answer to this prayer, that in the future all our enemies will be defeated and we will be victorious in Christ.  So will we be rewarded for our trust in Christ’s preserving grace. On that day our victory in Christ is complete.

1 Thess 3:13 so that he may establish your hearts blameless in holiness before our God and Father, at the coming of our Lord Jesus with all his saints.

1 Thess 5:23 Now may the God of peace himself sanctify you completely, and may your whole spirit and soul and body be kept blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.
