The Second Promise of Blessing!

Text: Zechariah 12:10-13:2

Now that the Holy Spirit has begun his work, now that the sinner is mourning over his sin, Christ is revealed as the Saviour!  Now see in the passage:-

1. The Fountain of Pardon and Cleansing!  V1

This imagery was extremely suggestive to Zechariah’s listeners.  A Fountain has been opened!  What a great blessing for the people who live in a land of blazing heat!  A fountain produced water, and water is vital for life and health.  Deut. 33:28 Israel then shall dwell in safety alone: the fountain of Jacob shall be upon a land of corn and wine; also his heavens shall drop down dew.  When Zechariah promised the people a fountain, he was promising them everything that was needed to sustain life itself!

Later, Jesus would make the same promise to those who come to Him.  We are spiritually thirsty, and only Jesus can quench the great thirst of the soul!  John 7:37-38.  Now, let us examine the text of the inspired Scriptures and see something about this fountain:-

  1. It is revealed on an APPOINTED day!  In that day There is an exact day in which this fountain shall be provided for mankind.  What day is that?  It is obviously the day of redemption, the day when salvation was wrought!  God has planned and ordained that day, from before the foundation of the world!   Rev. 13:8
  2. It is an OPENED Fountain! there shall be a fountain opened A fountain that is closed up is of no benefit to those who are dying of thirst!   Christ was pierced for us!  His blood was shed for us!  Now, in our last study, we noticed that we can only come to God in prayer through the shed blood of the Saviour.  But is that just a figure of speech?  Is the real point not that Jesus died to take our punishment?  NO!  It was absolutely essential that Christ Jesus SHED HIS BLOOD.  Leviticus 17:11      Atonement came when the blood was applied!  Hebrews 9:  Exodus 12:13  John 19:34  His blood flowed freely down that wooden cross, and God accepted that innocent blood, freely shed, in substitute for our sins!  There is a fountain filled with blood, drawn from Immanuel’s veins, and sinners plunged beneath that flood lose all their guilty sins!
  3. It has a PARTICULAR application! to the house of David and to the inhabitants of Jerusalem  Jesus died to save His people!  His mission was a very pointed and directed mission.  He did not come to offer people salvation on a ‘take it or leave it basis,’ He came to SAVE.  When He died on the Cross it was to REDEEM HIS PEOPLE.   Matthew 1:21)  We call this doctrine Particular Redemption.
  4. It has a DEFINITE purpose! for sin and for uncleanness.  What did the people of Zechariah’s day need?  What do we need today?  We need deliverance from the guilt and condemnation brought by sin, we need deliverance from sin’s impurity!  The Fountain that has been opened for us has these two effects upon our lives, for it atones for our sin and it cleanses us from unrighteousness!  It provides for purity as well as pardon.

The fountain of pardon and purity is still flowing!  It is still available!  O Christ, He is the fountain, the deep, sweet well of love!  The streams of earth I’ve tasted more deep I’ll drink above: There to an ocean fullness His mercy doth expand, And glory, glory dwelleth in Immanuel’s land.

2. The Fervour of the Pardoned and Cleansed!

Zech. 13:2   Now, the verses from 2-6 describe the consequences of the free pardon of God.  A free forgiveness does not lead to lethargy or ease, but to a more vigorous discharge of duty.  All sin must be regarded as an abomination before the Lord who is holy. Psalm 51:3-4  So, in Christ, God will not only bring redemption to those who accept Christ as Saviour, he will judge those who promote false religion!

  • With the death of Christ, Old Testament prophesy ceases! V3  The last of the Old Testament style of prophets was John the Baptist.  Dressed as an OT prophet, acting as an OT prophet, John came to declare the law of God, that men were sinners who must repent!  In Christ, God has finally spoken to mankind.
  • With the death of Christ, men who practice false religion are exposed to God! v4-5  You see, when a prophet went out to prophesy, he wore a hairy coat, like that worn by a mourner, and so the false prophets, spewing out their lies and idolatrous religion dressed in a similar manner.  It was difficult for the ordinary person to know who was the true prophet and who was the false prophet, for they dressed alike!  But when the Fountain of Blood is opened for sinners, false religion will be exposed!  The mournful coat will be dragged off the false prophet, and the wretched deceiver will start to deny that he ever was a prophet at all!

Now, the implication of this is clear.  In the glorious light of the Cross of Calvary, every preacher, every prophet is exposed for what he is!  How can we discern a true prophet from a false prophet?  Does he exalt the Cross, and the work of Christ upon the Cross for sinners?  Does he point men and women to the Cross, as the only fountain of life?  If he does not, if he puts anything else before the Cross, along with the Cross, beside the Cross, above the Cross, then he is a false prophet, and he must be exposed as such by the people of God, who are fervent for the Cross!
